Charity Game

Ancaster Little League players, coaches and parents:

Growing up, most of us had the opportunity to play organized sports. We may not have been the best player on the team -- some of us may actually have been closer to the other end of the spectrum -- but at least the opportunity was there.

What we didn’t realize at the time was how blessed and fortunate we were to be in the position to have that gift. Not every family does. Particularly here in Hamilton and especially now with the economy the way it is.

Last July, more than 50 players from the minor division of Ancaster Little League participated in a 10-hour charity game to raise money for the Robert Land Community Association’s baseball program. Operating in the hard-hit Keith Neighbourhood in the city’s north end, the association allows children from disadvantaged financial backgrounds to get shirts, umpires, equipment and play a season of ball for just $10. It’s a wonderful program.

However, the cost to operate it is significantly higher than $10 a player. Which is where you come in.

Once again this summer, we are planning a marathon charity game to do our part to allow others to have the same chance to play we enjoy. On Monday, June 29 – the first day of summer vacation seems like a perfect time to kick off the holidays by making a difference -- we’ll be getting together for a day of baseball and a goal of bringing in as much money as we can to help. This event has the full backing and support of Ancaster Little League’s executive.

This year though, we’re opening the event up to all age groups from t-ball right through to major. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the experience of having a great day of baseball while doing something to assist people in our community who need it. In other words, having fun and getting a wonderful life lesson at the same time.

Here’s how it’ll work ...

Just as it was last year, each player must raise at least $50 to play. They can ask family, friends and neighbours, mom and dad can write a cheque, or whatever they like. And $50 is the minimum. Many players last year came in far above that which was spectacular.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Major and Minor kids will play for 10 hours. Parents will fill out a form when their children arrive. Parents are then permitted to leave if they wish, as long as a working contact number is provided.

Also beginning at 8 a.m., t-ball kids will play for four hours and rookie ball kids for five hours. We’d encourage those parents to stick around if possible.

We will have a cash barbecue for lunch, a silent auction that should include some amazing items, and tons of fun playing ball.

Please give this game serious consideration. It’s for a great cause and as anyone who participated last year will tell you, was a blast.

To sign up your child, please e-mail your RSVP to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it No money is required until the morning we play.

More information is -- and will be -- available on our web site at www.leaguelineup.com/CharityGame.

Thanks for your consideration and your willingness to help others in our community.
