The Ancaster Bantam Boys Baseball Team had an exciting finish to their season in Thorold on the Labour Day Weekend at the Bantam Provincial Championships. They did not take the easy road in this double knock out tournament but landed in the Championship Game having to beat their opponents, Orangeville twice to win the gold.
It was definitely a “team win” as Ancaster handed Orangeville their first loss of the tournament with a 9 to 6 victory. After a slow start and down 5 to 0 Ancaster became refocused and started their attack to the glorious win. Troy Anstett was strong on the hill holding the Orangeville team to only 2 hits. Laine Renaud came in to close the game and secure the win. Nothing was getting by Greg Marco behind the plate and runners were kept at bay with many pick offs and a classic third base rocket to end the game. Davis Vallesi’s bat was humming all weekend. Daniel Madarasz was playing on the hot corner scooping up anything that came his way. Cam Laufman was like a vacuum at second. Spencer Jerome was at the top of the order setting the tone right from the get go. Mitchell Wilson made a jump in the air running catch to shut down the bases loaded. Brendan Graham had center field under control when he was not pitching throughout the weekend. We relied on the lightening fast speed of Rhys Tapper. Brad Doan put down textbook bunts to advance the runners. Craig Leonards classic tomahawk shot cashed in several RBI’s, while Tyler Tarasuk was quick to get the long shot in from the outfield.
Having beaten their opponents Ancaster would have to come back again to win the covenanted Championship ring. The game started tight but in the third inning Orangeville broke the game open and Ancaster failed to respond. The boys are still pretty proud of their silver provincial medal to end the season.
Laine Renaud made the Cardinals proud, as he was honoured as the tournament Most Sportsman Like player.
The Cardinals would like to thank Coach Mark Strongman, Barry Doan, and Nancy Anstett for all their hard work and dedication to the team. Special thanks to Adam Strongman who trained the boys all week in preparation for provincials.
